Chapter 86 · Verse 12 · Revealed in Makkah

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

Swearing to the Truthfulness of the Qur'an and the Failure of Those Who oppose it

Ibn `Abbas said, "Ar-raj` means rain." It has also been narrated from him that he said, "It means the clouds that contain rain." He also said,

وَالسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِ

Reflection — Maarif ul Quran

وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِ (I swear by the sky that rains...86:11) The word raj refers to 'the rain that comes down repeatedly'. In other words, the rain that comes down and stops and then returns.
