Maymoonah bint al-Harith (RA) and the road that welcomed her twice
She died in the exact place her marriage began, years later, on the road home.
The story
On her way back from her final Hajj, in the year 51 after the Hijrah, Maymoonah fell seriously ill and died at a place called Sarif, a few miles outside Makkah. It wasn't a random place to die. It was the exact spot, years earlier, where her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ had first been consummated.
She'd come to that marriage already carrying a different name — Barrah, "the righteous one" — until the Prophet ﷺ changed it, the same way he renamed several new Muslim women so none of them carried a name that sounded like self-praise. "Is she praising herself?" he asked, when someone questioned why the change was necessary at all. From then on she was Maymoonah.
She spent the years after that quietly: worship, and a pilgrimage to Makkah nearly every year of her life. 'A'ishah, who lived alongside her, remembered her plainly: "She was among the most pious of us, and the kindest to her kin."
Then, decades later, that same road brought her back to where it had begun. Her nephew, 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbaas, prepared her body there — on the same ground that had once welcomed her into marriage, the same stretch of road at both ends of her life with the Prophet ﷺ.
