The Arabic word for fasting, sawm, simply means "to refrain." Not eating, not drinking, not being intimate with your spouse, from the first light of dawn until the sun goes down — that's the outward shape of it. But the definition on paper is deceptively small next to what it actually asks of you across a full day, every day, for a month.
Three things make a fast valid. First, the intention — settled quietly in the heart before dawn, not something you have to say out loud or even put into exact words. Second, refraining completely from food and drink for the whole daylight stretch. Third, refraining from marital relations during those same hours, though this is permitted again once the sun sets and stays permitted until the next dawn.
There's a hadith that changes how all of this should be understood. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever doesn't give up false speech and acting on it, Allah has no need of them giving up their food and drink. In other words: an empty stomach was never the actual goal. It's the visible layer of something meant to reach further — the tongue, the eyes, the temper, the way you treat people when you're tired and hungry and could easily excuse yourself for snapping. A fast that leaves the food alone but lets everything else run loose has technically been kept and genuinely missed the point.
If you break your fast by mistake — you forgot, and ate or drank without thinking — nothing is lost. The fast still counts. The moment you remember, you simply stop.
From the Quran
“And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset.”
2:187
What does this bring up for you today?
To carry with you
Renew your intention quietly each night or before Fajr — a simple, private decision in your heart that tomorrow is a fasting day. Nothing more is required of it than that.
