Divorce — the ending nobody planned

Almost nobody enters a marriage expecting to be sitting here.

Almost nobody enters a marriage expecting to be sitting here. And yet here you are, carrying something that is simultaneously a grief, a relief, a failure, a liberation, a loss, and a beginning — sometimes all at once, in the same afternoon.

Divorce is one of the most searched Islamic topics online and one of the least honestly discussed in Muslim communities. The gap between what people are actually experiencing and what they feel they can say is large enough to cause real harm.

Here is something that needs to be said directly: divorce is permitted in Islam. It was not an accident that it was built into the framework from the beginning. The Prophet ﷺ said divorce is 'of all the permitted things, the most disliked by Allah' — and this is often quoted to create guilt. But it is also a statement of what is permitted. Not forbidden. Not the end of one's relationship with Allah.

The emotional experience of divorce is complex and non-linear in ways that can be disorienting. You may grieve someone you chose to leave. You may feel relief and guilt about the relief. You may feel angry, then sad, then free, then devastated, sometimes in the same day. This is not confusion. This is the natural response to the ending of something significant.

What makes Islamic divorce particularly complicated is the community layer — the sense of having failed publicly, the fear of judgment, the concern about how you will be seen. These things are real and they need to be named as real, not spiritualised away.

What helps: therapy, specifically. Honest conversations with at least one person who is genuinely on your side. Time that is given its proper weight — not 'you'll be fine' but 'this is going to take as long as it takes.' Your life is not over. It is, uncomfortably and painfully, beginning again.

What does this bring up for you today?

If you need more support

Therapy specifically focused on life transitions can help significantly during and after divorce. You do not need to navigate this alone.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it.” (Abu Dawud)
