اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اَللّهُ أَكْبَرُ، (لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ) سُبْحَانَكَ، إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِيْ فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ

Alhamdu lillaah. Subhaanal-ladhee sakhkhara lanaa haadhaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Alhamdu lillaah, alhamdu lillaah, alhamdu lillaah, Allahu 'Akbar, Allahu 'Akbar, Allahu 'Akbar, (laa ilahaa 'illaa 'Anta) subhaanaka 'innee dhalamtu nafsee faghfir lee, fa'innahu laa yaghfirudh-dhunooba 'illaa 'Anta

“Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.”

Rasulullah (ﷺ) used to say Bismillah while boarding the ride, he said the rest after setting down:

اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اَللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيْفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوْءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

Allahu 'Akbar, Allahu 'Akbar, Allahu 'Akbar. Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haadhaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Allaahumma 'innaa nas'aluka fee safarinaa haadhal-birra wattaqwaa, waminal-'amali maa tardhaa, Allaahumma hawwin 'alaynaa safaranaa haadhaa watwi 'annaa bu'dahu, Allaahumma 'Antas-saahibu fis-safari, walkhaleefatu fil-'ahli, Allaahumma 'innee 'A'oodhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka-'aabatil-mandhari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maali wal 'ahli

“Allah is the Most Great (3 times). Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety, and for works that are pleasing to You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning. And when the Prophet (ﷺ) returned from his journey, he would recite it and add to it:”

Abdullah bin Umar (RA) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite this dua at the beginning of his journey:

أَسْتَوْدِعُكَ اللَّهَ الَّذِيْ لَا تَضِيْعُ وَدَائِعُهُ

Astawdi'ukAllahal-ladhee laa tadhee'u wadaa'i'uhu

“I leave you in the care of Allah, as nothing is lost that is in His care. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave me a send-off and said: (The dua is mentioned above). So, musaafir should say this dua to the farewell giver.But Musaafir and farewell giver both can supplicate this dua for each other.”

أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِيْنَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيْمَ عَمَلِكَ

Astawdi'ullaaha deenaka, wa 'amaanataka, wa khawaateema 'amalika

“I leave your religion in the care of Allah, as well as your safety, and the last of your deeds. Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) said, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: when he bid farewell, he grab his hand and did musafaha and said the above mentioned dua.In another narration, Abdullah Ibn Yazid Khatmi (RA) said, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) bid farewell by saying these words. But in this case, he used plural (kum) instead of singular (ka): “Astad’iullaha diinaakum wa amaanatakum wa khawatima a’maalikum” I leave your religion in the care of Allah, as well as your safety, and the last of your deeds.”

زَوَّدَكَ اللَّهُ التَّقْوَى وَغَفَرَ لَكَ ذَنْبَكَ وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ

Zawwadakal-laahut-taqwaa, wa ghafara thanbaka, wa yassara lakal-khayra haythu maa kunta

“May Allah give you piety as your provision, forgive your sins, and make goodness easy for you wherever you are. Anas ibn Malik (RA) said, "A man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said, 'I have decided to travel. Give me a Travel allowance.' Then he said these words and prayed for him.”

أَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A'oodhu bikalimaatil-laahit-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq

“I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. We have seen that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: If a person goes to a place or stops somewhere on a journey and says this dua, then nothing can harm him while he is there.”

اَللَّهُمَّ رَّبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الْأَرَضِيْنَ السَّبْعِ ومَا أَقْلَلْنَ، ورَبَّ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ ومَا أَضْلَلْنَ، ورَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ، أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا، (وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا) وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا

Allaahumma Rabbas-samaawaatis-sab'i wa maa 'adhlalna, wa Rabbal-'aradheenas-sab'i wa maa 'aqlalna, wa Rabbash-shayaateeni wa maa 'adhlalna, wa Rabbar-riyaahi wa maa tharayna. 'As'aluka khayra haathihil-qaryati wa khayra 'ahlihaa, (wa khayra maa feehaa), wa na‛oodhu bika min sharrihaa, wa sharri 'ahlihaa, wa sharri maa feehaa

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they overshadow, Lord of the seven worlds and all they uphold, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray, Lord of the winds and all they scatter. I ask You for the goodness of this town and for the goodness of its people, and for the goodness it contains. I seek refuge in You from its evil, from the evil of its people and from the evil it contains. Suhaib (RA) said that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say these words whenever he saw a town before entering it.”

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِهَا وَخَيْرِ أَهْلِهَا وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا

Allaahumma inni As'aluka min khayrihaa wa khayri 'ahlihaa wa 'a'oodhu bika min sharrihaa, wa sharri 'ahlihaa

“Ya Allah! I ask you for the blessing of this place and the goodness of it’s inhabitant’s. And I take refuge in you from harm of this place and harm of it’s inhabitant’s. It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) that he stood at the entrance of the market, recited the du'a and entered the market.”

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ، وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Laa 'ilaaha 'illAllahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa Huwa hayyun laa yamootu, biyadihil-khayru, wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shay'in Qadeer

“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partener. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He brings life and He causes death, and He is living and does not die. In His Hand is all good, and He is Able to do all things. Allah will write a million rewards for him, remove a million sins from him and raise his status by one million levels.”

Umar ibnul khattab (RA) narrated that: the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever enters the marketplace and says:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Bismillaah

“With the Name of Allah. Abu al-Malih (RA) reported on the authority of a man : I was riding on a mount behind the prophet (ﷺ). It stumbled. Thereupon I said: May the devil perish! He said: do not say; may the devil perish! For you say that, he will swell so much so that he will be like a house, and say: by my power. But say: (The dua is mentioned above) For when you say that, he will diminish so much so that he will be like a fly.”

اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar

“Allah is the Most Great. And when descend, we said -”

Narrated Jabir bin Abdillah (RA): He said, "When we ascended, we would say:

سَمِعَ سَامِعٌ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ، وَحُسْنِ بَلَائِهِ عَلَيْنَا، رَبَّنَا صَاحِبْنَا، وَأَفْضِلْ عَلَيْنَا، عَائِذًا بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ

Sami'a saami'un bihamdillaahi wa husni balaa'ihi 'alaynaa. Rabbanaa saahibnaa, wa 'afdhil 'alaynaa 'aa'ithan billaahi minan-naar.

“He Who listens has heard that we praise Allah for the good things He gives us. Our Lord, be with us and bestow Your favor upon us. I seek the protection of Allah from the Fire.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say at the end of the night while on a journey:

اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar

“Allah is the Most Great.”

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah ibn' Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to rise on every high ground on the way back from a battle or Hajj or 'Umrah and say three times:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسٰىهَآ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Bismillahi majraha wa mursaha inna rabbee laGhafoorur-Raheem

“In the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. Note that, this Dua cannot be said while mounting an animal or any means of transport. However, in our country, this dua is written in front of many vehicles and the supervisor says this dua when starting the journey, which is wrong.”

Noah (AS) took a boat ride while reading the following prayer:

اَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allahu Akbar

“Allah is the Most Great.”

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out on a journey, he would sit on the back of his camel and say three times:

اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ اَللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لَنَا الْأَرْضَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا السَّفَرَ

Allaahumma 'Antas-saahibu fis-safari wal-khaleefatu fil-'ahli, Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oodhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa kaabatil munqalabi wa su'il manzari fil-ahli wal maali, Allaahummatwi lanal-arda wa hawwin alainas-safara

“O Allah, You are the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looks after the family; O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the difficulty of travelling, finding harm when I return, and unhappiness in what I see coming to my family and property. O Allah, make the length of his journey short for us, and the journey easy for us.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), used to recite this du'a when he was on a journey:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِيْ هَذَا مِنَ الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اَللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا الْمَسِيرَ وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَ الْأَرْضِ اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اَللَّهُمَّ اصْحَبْنَا فِي سَفَرِنَا وَاخْلُفْنَا فِي أَهْلِنَا

Allaahumma inni as’aluka fi safari hadha minal-birri wat-taqwa, wa minal-`amali maa tarda. Allaahumma hawwin `alainal-masira, watwi `anna bu`dal-ard. Allaahumma antas-saahibu fis safari wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allaahumma ashaabna fi safarina wakhlufna fi ahlina

“O Allah, I ask You in this journey of mine from the righteousness and piety and actions that which you are pleased with. O Allah, ease for us the path, and make near for us the distance of the land. O Allah, You are the companion in the journey, and the caretaker for the family. O Allah, accompany us in our journey, and take care of our families”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), used to recite this du'a when he was on a journey:

اَللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لَهُ الْأَرْضَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْهِ السَّفَرَ

Allahummatwi lahul-arda wa hawwin `alaihis-safar.

“O Allah make near for him the distance, and ease for him the journey.”

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhaanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha watwi 'anna bu'dah. Allahumma antas-saahibu fis-safari wal-khaleefatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'oodhu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka'aabatil-manzari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maali wal-ahl.

“Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. How perfect He is, the One who has placed this transport at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final return. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and for deeds which please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family left behind. O Allah, I take refuge with You from the hardships of travel, from a distressing change of scene, and from an ill-fated outcome with wealth and family.”

The full traveller's dua, said as a journey begins.

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ وَرَبَّ الْأَرَضِينَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا أَضْلَلْنَ وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا

Allahumma Rabbas-samaawaatis-sab'i wa ma azlalna, wa Rabbal-aradeenas-sab'i wa ma aqlalna, wa Rabbash-shayaateeni wa ma adlalna, wa Rabbar-riyaahi wa ma dharayn. As'aluka khayra haadhihil-qaryati wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma feeha, wa a'oodhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma feeha.

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they cover, Lord of the seven earths and all they carry, Lord of the devils and all they misguide, Lord of the winds and all they scatter. I ask You for the good of this town, the good of its people, and the good within it, and I take refuge with You from its evil, the evil of its people, and the evil within it.”

Upon arriving somewhere new.

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer. Aayiboona taa'iboona 'aabidoona li-Rabbina haamidoon.

“Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent. We return, repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.”

Said on the way back from a journey.

زَوَّدَكَ اللَّهُ التَّقْوَى وَغَفَرَ ذَنْبَكَ وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ

Zawwadakallahut-taqwa, wa ghafara dhanbaka, wa yassara lakal-khayra haythuma kunt.

“May Allah provide you with taqwa, forgive your sins, and make good easy for you wherever you are.”

Said to someone setting off on a journey.

اللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لَهُ الْبُعْدَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْهِ السَّفَرَ

Allahummatwi lahul-bu'da wa hawwin 'alayhis-safar.

“O Allah, fold up the distance for him and make the journey easy for him.”

Not a traveller's own dua, but what the Prophet ﷺ said for a man as he set off — worth saying for someone else's journey, not only your own.

أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكُمْ وَأَمَانَتَكُمْ وَخَوَاتِيمَ أَعْمَالِكُمْ

Astawdi'ullaha deenakum wa amaanatakum wa khawaatima a'maalikum.

“I entrust to Allah your faith, your trustworthiness, and the outcome of your deeds.”

The Prophet's ﷺ own farewell, said while holding someone's hand before they left.
