Grief & Loss

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha

“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and replace it with something better.”

Upon receiving news of any loss.

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ، وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ فِي الْمَهْدِيِّينَ، وَاخْلُفْهُ فِي عَقِبِهِ فِي الْغَابِرِيْنَ، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ، وَافْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ، وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ

Alla-humma'gfir lahu (person's name), warfa'a darajatahu fil mahdiyin, wa'khlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil ga-birin, wagfir lana wa lahu ya rabbal' a-lamin, wafsa'ah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nau-wir lahu fihi

“O Allah, forgive him (person's name), raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, grant him a successor in his descendants who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave spacious, and grant him light in it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Abu Salama (RA) (as he died). His eyes were fixedly open. Rasoolullah (ﷺ) closed them, and then said: When the soul is taken away the sight follows it. Some of the people of his family wept and wailed. So he said: Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for angels say "Amen" to what you say. He then said- (The dua is mentioned above)”

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمِيْنَ إِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُوْنَ أَسْاَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ

As-salamu 'alaykum ahlad diyari min al-mu'minina wal-muslimin, inna In sha' Allahu bikum lahikun, as-alullaha lana walakumul 'afiyah

“Peace be upon you, the inhabitants of the grave, among the believers, and Muslims, and if Allah will then we shall join you. I pray to Allah peace for us and for you. Buraida ibnul husaib aslami (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them to recite this dua when anyone went to the graveyard.”

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمِيْنَ وَيَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُسْتَقْدِمِيْنَ مِنَّا وَالْمُسْتَأْخِرِيْنَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَلَاحِقُونَ

As-salamu 'ala ahlid diya-ri minal mu’minin wal muslimin, wa yarhamullahul mustaq’dimina minna-wal mustakhirin, wa inna- insa allahu bikum lala-’hiqun

“Peace be upon the inhabitants of this place among the believers and Muslims. May Allah have mercy upon those who have gone on ahead of us and those who come later on, and we will join you, if Allah wills. A’isha (RA) asked Allah’s messenger (ﷺ) what she should say, i.e. when visiting graves, and he told her to say (The Dua is mentioned above).”

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِيْنَ، وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُوْنَ

As-salamu 'alaikum dara qaumin mu’minin, wa inna-insha- allahu bikum la-‘hikun

“Peace be upon you, O you who believe. We will meet you, if Allah willing. Abu Hurairah said, "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to the graveyard and said these words."”

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَأَتَاكُمْ مَا تُوعَدُونَ غَدًا مُؤَجَّلُونَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأَهْلِ بَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ

As-salamu 'alaikum da-ra kaumin mu’minin, wa ata-kum ma-tu’aadun ‘gadan muajjalun, wa inna-insha- allahu bikum la-’hikun. Alla-humma’gfir liahli baki‘eil garqad.

“Peace be upon you, O you who believers inhabitants of the grave! The promise that was given to you has come to you, and you are waiting for the day to come. And we will meet you by the will of Allah. O Allah, forgive the inhabitants of the Baqi graveyard. Ayesha (RA) said, "When Rasoolullah (ﷺ) stayed in my house, he used to go to the Baqi' graveyard at the last hour of night and say these words.”

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا اَللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ اَللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلَا تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ

Allahum-maghfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa thakarinaa wa 'unthaanaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa'ibinaa. Allaahumma man 'ahyaytahu minnaa fa'ahyihi 'alal-'Imaan, wa man tawaffaytahu minnaa fatawaffahu 'alal-'Islam, Allaahumma laa tahrimnaa 'ajrahu wa laa tudhillanaa ba'dahu

“O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are present and those of us who are absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, to whomsoever of us You givest life grant him life as a believer, and whomsoever of us You takest in death take him in death as a follower of Islam. O Allah, do not withhold from us the reward (of faith) and do not lead us astray after his death.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say in funeral prayer:

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ [وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ]

Allahum-maghfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa 'akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bilmaa'i waththalji walbarad, wa naqqihi minal-khataayaa kamaa naqqaytath-thawbal-'abyadha minad-danas, wa 'abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa 'ahlan khayran min 'ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa 'adkhilhul-jannata, wa 'a'idhhu min 'adhaabil-qabr (wa 'adhaabin-naar)

“O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous to him and cause his entrance to be wide and wash him with water and snow and hail. Cleanse him of his transgressions as white cloth is cleansed of stains. Give him an abode better than his home, and a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Take him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave [and from the punishment of Hell-fire]. Awf ibn Malik (RA) said, When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the funeral prayer, I memorized this dua from him. Hearing this dua, I wished that the dead body would be me! (The dua is Mentioned above)”

اَللَّهُمَّ (إِنَّهُ) عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ كَانَ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُوْلُكَ وَأَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِي إِحْسَانِهِ وَإِنْ كَانَ مُسِيْئًا فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِ اَللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلَا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهُ

Alla-humma, (innahu) ‘abduka, wabnu‘ 'abdika, wabnu amatika, ka-na yashhadu an laa ilaaha illa anta, wa anna mu’hmmadan ‘abduka wa rasooluka, wa aanta a'laamu bihi. Alla-humma, in kaana mu'hhsinan fajid fi e'hsaa-nihi, wa in ka-na musi-an fataja-waz ‘an saiyyi-aa-tihi. Alla-humma laa-ta'harimna-ajrahu, wala-taftinna ba'adahu

“O Allah, this man is Your servant, the son of Your male servant, the son of female servant. He testified that there is no true ilaah but you and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is your servant and your messenger. And you are more aware of it. O Allah, if he is a doer of good, then increase his goodness. And if he has sinned, then forgive him. O Allah, do not deprive us of His reward and do not tempt us after that.”

اَللَّهُمَّ عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ اِحْتَاجَ إِلَى رَحْمَتِكَ، وَأَنْتَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْ عَذَابِهِ، إِنْ كَانَ مُحْسِنًا فَزِدْ فِي حَسَنَاتِهِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مُسِيئًا فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْهُ

Allaahumma 'abduka wabnu 'amatika ihtaaja 'ilaa rahmatika, wa 'Anta ghaniyyun 'an 'adhaabihi, 'in kaana mu'hsinan fazid fee hasanaatihi, wa 'in kaana musee'an fatajaawaz 'anhu

“O Allah, he is the son of One of Your male & female slave, he is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of his torment. If he was pious, then increase his rewards and if he was a sinner then pardon him.”

Narrated by Yazid Ibn Rukana Ibn Muttalib (RA): When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) perform Janazah prayer, he used to say:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ (فُلَانَ بْنَ فُلَانٍ) فِي ذِمَّتِكَ وَحَبْلِ جِوَارِكَ فَقِهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْوَفَاءِ وَالْحَقِّ اَللَّهُمَّ فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ

Allaahumma 'inna (fulanabna fulan) fee dhimmatika, wa habli jiwaarika, faqihi min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhaabin-naari, wa 'Anta 'ahlul-wafaa'i walhaqq. Allaahumma Faghfir lahu warhamhu 'innaka 'Antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem.

“O Allah, surely [name the person] is under Your protection, and in the rope of Your security, so save him from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire. You fulfill promises and grant rights, so forgive him and have mercy on him. Surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

It is narrated on the authority of Wasila ibn al-Aska (RA) that he said, 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the janaza of a Muslim man with us. There I heard him said -

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهَا وَارْحَمْهَا وَعَافِهَا وَاعْفُ عَنْهَا وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهَا وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهَا وَاغْسِلْهَا بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهَا مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهَا دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهَا وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهَا وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهَا وَأَدْخِلْهَا الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهَا مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ [عَذَابِ النَّارِ]

Allahum-maghfir laha warhamha, wa 'aafiha, wa'fu 'anha, wa 'akrim nuzulaha, wa wassi' mudkhalaha, waghsilha bilmaa'i waththalji walbarad, wa naqqiha minal-khataayaa kamaa naqqaytath-thawbal-'abyadha minad-danas, wa 'abdilha daaran khayran min daariha, wa 'ahlan khayran min 'ahliha, wa zawjan khayran min zawjiha, wa 'adkhilhal-jannata, wa 'a'idh-ha min 'adhaabil-qabr [or, 'adhaabin-naar instead of 'adhaabil-qabr].

“O Allah, forgive her and have mercy on her and give her strength and pardon her. Be generous to her and cause her entrance to be wide and wash her with water and snow and hail. اَللَّهُمَّ (إِنَّهَا) أَمَتُكَ وَبِنْتُ عَبْدِكَ وَبِنْتُ أَمَتِكَ كَانَتْ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُوْلُكَ وَأَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَتْ مُحْسِنَةً فَزِدْ فِي إِحْسَانِهَا وَإِنْ كَانَتْ مُسِيْئَةً فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهَا اَللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهَا وَلَا تَفْتِنَّا بَعْدَهَا

Alla-humma, (innaha) ‘amatuka, wa bintu 'abdika, wa bintu amatika, kaanat yashhadu an laa ilaaha illaa anta, wa anna mu’hammadan ‘abduka wa rasooluka, wa aanta a’lamu bihi. Alla-humma, in kaanat mu'hsinatan fajid fi ehsaa-niha, wa in kaanat musi-atan fataja-waz ‘an saiyyi-aa-tiha. Alla-humma laa-ta'harimna-ajraha, wala-taftinna ba'adaha.

“O Allah, this woman is Your servant, the daughter of Your male servant, the daughter of female servant. She testified that there is no true ilaah but you and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is your servant and your messenger. And you are more aware of it. O Allah, if she is a doer of good, then increase her goodness. And if she has sinned, then forgive her. O Allah, do not deprive us of her reward and do not tempt us after that.”

اَللَّهُمَّ أَمَتُكَ وَبِنْتُ أَمَتِكَ اِحْتَاجَتْ إِلَى رَحْمَتِكَ، وَأَنْتَ غَنِيٌّ عَنْ عَذَابِهَا، إِنْ كَانَتْ مُحْسِنَةً فَزِدْ فِي حَسَنَاتِهَا، وَإِنْ كَانَتْ مُسِيئَةً فَتَجَاوَزْ عَنْهَا

Allaahumma ‛amatuka wabintu ‛amatika, i’htaajat ilaa ra’hmatika, wa anta ghaniyyun ‛an ‛adhaabiha, in kaanat mu’hsinatan fazid fee ‘hasanaatiha, wa in kaanat musee’atan fa tajaawaz ‛anha

“O Allah, she is the daughter of One of Your male & female slave, she is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of her torment. If she was pious then increase her rewards and if she was a sinner then pardon her.”

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ (فُلَانَةَ بِنْتُ فُلَانٍ) فِي ذِمَّتِكَ وَحَبْلِ جِوَارِكَ فَقِهِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْوَفَاءِ وَالْحَقِّ، اَللَّهُمَّ فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا وَارْحَمْهَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ

Allaahumma 'inna (fulanata bintu fulan) fee dhimmatika, wa habli jiwaarika, faqihi min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhaabin-naari, wa 'Anta 'ahlul-wafaa'i walhaqq. Allaahumma faghfir laha warhamha 'innaka 'Antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem

“O Allah, surely [name the person] is under Your protection, and in the rope of Your security, so save her from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire. You fulfill promises and grant rights, so forgive her and have mercy on her. Surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبُّهَا، وَأَنْتَ خَلَقْتَهَا، وَأَنْتَ هَدَيْتَهَا لِلْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَنْتَ قَبَضْتَ رُوْحَهَا، وَأَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِسِرِّهَا وَعَلَانِيَتِهَا، جِئْنَا شُفَعَاءَ فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا

Alla-humma, anta rabbuhaa, wa anta khalaqtahaa, wa anta hadaitahaa lil islaam, wa anta qabadta ru'hahaa, wa anta a'lamu bisirriha wa 'ala-niyatihaa, ji'na shufa'a-a fagfir laha

“O Allah, You are his Lord, You have created him, You have shown him the way to Islam, You have accepted his soul, You know all his open and secrets. We have come to intercede for him, so forgive him.”

اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ فَرَطًا وَذُخْرًا لِوَالِدَيْهِ، وَشَفِيعًا مُجَابًا، اَللَّهُمَّ ثَقِّلْ بِهِ مَوَازِينَهُمَا، وَأَعْظِمْ بِهِ أُجُورَهُمَا، وَأَلْحِقْهُ بِصَالِحِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَاجْعَلْهُ فِي كَفَالَةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَقِهِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ، وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأَسْلَافِنَا، وَأَفْرَاطِنَا، وَمَنْ سَبَقَنَا بِالْإِيمَانِ

Allahum-maj'alhu faratan wa dhukhran liwaalidayhi, wa shafee'an mujaaban. Allaahumma thaqqil bihi mawaazeenahumaa wa 'a'dhim bihi 'ujoorahumaa, wa 'alhiqhu bisaalihil-mu'mineen, waj'alhu fee kafaalati 'Ibraaheema, wa qihi birahmatika 'adhaabal-jaheem, wa 'abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa 'ahlan khayran min 'ahlihi, Allahum-maghfir li'aslaafinaa, wa 'afraatinaa wa man sabaqanaa bil'eemaan.

“O Allah, make him a precursor, a forerunner and a treasure for his parents and an answered intercessor. O Allah, make him weigh heavily in their scales (of good) and magnify their reward. Make him join the righteous of the believers. Place him in the care of Ibrahim (As). Save him by Your mercy from the torment of Hell. Give him a home better than his home and a family better than his family. O Allah, forgive those who have gone (i.e. passed away) before us, our lost children (by death), and those who have preceded us in Faith.”

Following Dua is good -

اَللَّهُمَّ أَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Allaahumma 'a'idh-hu min 'adhaabil-qabr

“O Allah, protect him from the torment of the grave. Narrated by Sa’eed Ibn Musayyib (R) He said, "I perform janaza of a child behind Abu Hurairah (RA) who has never committed any sin." There I heard Abu Huraira (RA) say: (The dua is Mentioned above)”

اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لَنَا سَلَفًا وَّفَرَطًا وَّأَجْرًا

Allahum-maj'alhu lanaa salafan, wa faratan, wa 'ajran

“O Allah, make him for us a precursor, a forerunner and a cause of reward.”

The famous Tabi'i Hasan Basri (R) used to recite Surah Fatiha at the janaza of child and recite the following du'a:

اَللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَثَبِّتْهُ

Allahum-maghfir lahu wa thabbithu

“O Allah, forgive him, strengthen him (During question of grave) Narrated Uthman ibn Affan (RA) : Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) became free from burying the dead, he used to stay at him (i.e. his grave) and say: Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now.”

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى وَكُلٌّ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى

Inna lillaahi maa 'akhadha, wa lahu maa 'a'taa, wa kullun 'indahu bi'ajalin musamma

“Whatever Allah takes is His, and whatever He gives is His, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world). Narrated by Usama bin Zaid (RA): We were with the Prophet (ﷺ) when suddenly there came to him a messenger from one of his daughters who was asking him to come and see her son who was dying. The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to the messenger), (The dua is Mentioned above). So order her to be patient and hope for Allah's reward.”

أَعْظَمَ اللَّهُ أَجْرَكَ، وَأَحْسَنَ عَزَاءَكَ، وَغَفَرَ لِمَيِّتِكَ

A'dhamAllahu 'ajraka, wa 'ahsana 'azaa'aka wa ghafara limayyitik.

“May Allah increase your reward, grant you the tawfiq of patience (in mourning), and forgive the dead person.”

It is better to recite this dua in giving condolence

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ فِي الْمَهْدِيِّينَ وَاخْلُفْهُ فِي عَقِبِهِ فِي الْغَابِرِينَ وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَافْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ

Allahumma-ghfir lahu warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghaabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabbal-'alameen, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh.

“O Allah, forgive him, raise his rank among the rightly guided, and be a successor to those he has left behind. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make spacious his grave and illuminate it for him.”

Said with the name of the person who has passed, in place of 'him' or 'her'.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ

Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'aafihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama naqqaytath-thawbal-abyada minad-danas, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannah, wa a'idhhu min 'adhaabil-qabri wa 'adhaabin-naar.

“O Allah, forgive and have mercy upon him, excuse him and pardon him. Make honourable his reception and expand his entry. Cleanse him with water, snow and hail, and purify him of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Admit him into the Garden, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.”

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ وَلَا تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ

Allahummaghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shaahidina wa ghaa'ibina, wa sagheerina wa kabeerina, wa dhakarina wa unthaana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawaffahu 'alal-eemaan. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba'dah.

“O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whomever among us You keep alive, let their life be upon Islam, and whomever among us You take unto Yourself, let their death be upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, and do not let us stray after them.”

For a community or family gathered together in loss, not only an individual's grief.

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى فَلْتَصْبِرْ وَلْتَحْتَسِبْ

Inna lillahi ma akhadh, wa lahu ma a'ta, wa kullu shay'in 'indahu bi-ajalin musamma. Faltasbir waltahtasib.

“Verily, to Allah belongs what He took, and to Him belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed time. So be patient, and seek the reward.”

Words to offer someone grieving, or to hold onto yourself.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَاحِقُونَ نَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمُ الْعَافِيَةَ

As-salaamu 'alaykum ahlad-diyaari minal-mu'mineena wal-muslimeen, wa inna inshaa'Allahu bikum laahiqoon. Nas'alullaha lana wa lakumul-'aafiyah.

“Peace be upon you, inhabitants of these graves, among the believers and the Muslims. We will, Allah willing, be united with you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.”
