Gratitude

رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ

Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'mataka allati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya, wa an a'mala saalihan tardaah.

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that will please You.”

The Prophet Sulayman's (AS) own dua, made when he had been given more than almost anyone in history — a reminder that gratitude is asked for, not assumed.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

“O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.”

The Prophet ﷺ told Mu'adh ibn Jabal never to abandon this dua after every prayer.

جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا

Jazak Allahu khayra.

“May Allah reward you with good.”

The Prophet ﷺ said this is the most complete way to thank someone — for a person who has helped you, however small the favour.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ

Alhamdulillahi 'ala kulli haal.

“All praise is for Allah in every circumstance.”

Not only for good news — gratitude that holds even when the circumstance is not what you would have chosen.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqaana wa ja'alana muslimeen.

“All praise is for Allah, who has fed us, given us drink, and made us Muslims.”

After a meal — naming the ordinary as a blessing, not only the extraordinary.
