Anxiety & Worry

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wal-ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dhala id-dayn wa ghalabatir-rijal

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by others.”

Any time, particularly in moments of worry or financial difficulty. The Prophet ﷺ recited this regularly as a morning supplication.

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min az-zalimin

“There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I have been of the wrongdoers.”

When feeling overwhelmed or far from where you want to be spiritually. The supplication of Yunus (AS) from within the whale.

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Allahumma ikfini bihalaalika an haramika wa aghnini bifadhlika amman siwak

“O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, freeing me from what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your bounty, freeing me from dependence on anyone other than You.”

When worried about provision or feeling dependent on others.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، الْعَظِيْمُ الْحَلِيْمُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ، وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ، وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيْمِ

Laa 'ilaaha 'illAllaahul-'Adheemul-Haleem, laa 'ilaaha 'illAllaahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Adheem, laa 'ilaaha 'illAllaahu Rabbus-samaawaati wa Rabbul-'ardi wa Rabbul-'Arshil-Kareem

“There is none worthy of worship but Allah the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah at the time of distress, saying, (the dua is mentioned above). [1] Ali (RA) said, The Messenger of Allah taught me this above mentioned dua in the state of anxiety and distress. [2]”

اَللَّهُ اَللَّهُ رَبِّي لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا

Allahu Allahu Rabbee laa 'ushriku bihi shay'an.

“Allah, Allah is my Lord. I do not associate anything with Him. Narrated Asma' daughter of Umays (RA): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: May I not teach you phrases which you utter in distress? These are: (The dua is mentioned avobe)”

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، وَابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُــــلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

Allaahumma 'innee 'abduka, wabnu 'abdika, wabnu 'amatika, naasiyatee biyadika, maadhin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadhaa'uka, 'as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, 'aw 'anzaltahu fee kitaabika, 'aw 'allamtahu 'ahadan min khalqika, 'awista'tharta bihi fee 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indaka, 'an taj'alal-Qur'aana rabee'a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jalaa'a huznee, wa thahaaba hammee

“O Allah, I am Your slave and the son of Your male slave and the son of your female slave. My forehead is in Your Hand (i.e. you have control over me). Your Judgment upon me is assured and Your Decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have named Yourself with, revealed in Your Book, taught any one of Your creation or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my sadness and the reliever of my distress. Allah will surely remove his worries and troubles and replace them with joy. ”It was asked, O Messenger of Allah! Shall we not learn it? ' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Of course! Anyone who hears this should memorize it.””

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Masood (RA): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said, "If a servant is faced with any anxiety or distress, then say:

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allaahumma 'innee 'A'oodhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dhala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal

“O Allah, I seek refuge in you from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men (i.e. others).”

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say:

اَللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو، فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allaahumma rahmataka 'arjoo falaa takilnee 'ilaa nafsee tarfata 'ayen, wa 'aslih lee sha'nee kullahu, laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta

“O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blinking of an eye (i.e. a moment). Correct all of my affairs for me. There is none worthy of worship but You. Prophet (ﷺ) used to say this supplication increasingly.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The supplication of the anxious person is -

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

Laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta subhaanaka 'innee kuntu minadh-dhaalimeen

“There is none worthy of worship but You, glory is to You. Surely, I was among the wrongdoers. So indeed, no Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except Allah responds to him. [1]”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي مِمَّا ابْتَلَاكَ بِهِ، وَفَضَّلَنِي عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ تَفْضِيلًا

Alhamdu lillaahil-lathee 'aafaanee mimmab-talaaka bihi wa fadhdhalanee 'alaa katheerin mimman khalaqa tafdheela

“Praise is to Allah Who has spared me what He has afflicted you with, and preferred me greatly above much of what He has created. That danger will not touch him.”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A person who sees a person in danger, then says:

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّوْمُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيْثُ

Ya ‘hayyi-u ya qayyumu bira’hmatika astagith

“O Ever Living, O Self-Subsisting and Supporter of all, by Your mercy I seek assistance. Whenever a matter would distress him, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say (above dua)”

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُوْنَ، اَللَّهُمَّ عِنْدَكَ أَحْتَسِبُ مُصِيْبَتِيْ فَأْجُرْنِيْ فِيْهَا وَأَبْدِلْنِيْ مِنْهَا خَيْرًا.

Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji`un, Allaahumma `indaka ahtasibu musibati fa’jurni fihaa wa abdilni minhaa khair.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, I seek reward with You for my affliction, so reward me for it, and replace it for me with something better.”

اَللَّهُمَّ رَادَّ الضَّالَّةِ وَهَادِيَ الضَّلَالَةِ أَنْتَ تَهْدِيْ مِنَ الضَّلَالَةِ، اُرْدُدْ عَلَيَّ ضَالَّتِيْ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَسُلْطَانِكَ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ عَطَائِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ.

Allaahumma raaddad daallati wa haadiyad dalaalati anta tahdi minad dalaalah, urdud alayya daallati biqudratika wa sultaanika fainnahaa min ataaika wa fadlik.

“O Allah, the Returner of lost things, the Guide to the lost, You are the Guide to the lost. You, in your power and strength, give me back what I lost. Because, this object is given by you and I got it by your grace.”

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِيْمُ الْكَرِيْمُ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ السَّمٰوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

Laa ilaha illallaahul halimul karim, subhaanallaahi rabbis samawaatis sab’i wa rabbil ‘arshil ‘azim, alhamdu lillaahi rabbil ‘aalamin.

“There is no true God but Allah the Most Patient, the Most Honorable. I am proclaiming the holiness of the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the glorious throne. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.”

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي وَنُورَ صَدْرِي وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, naasiyati bi yadik, maadin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uk. As'aluka bikulli-ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, awista'tharta bihi fi 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'alal-Qur'aana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

“O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.”

When anxiety or sorrow feels heavy and you need words that reach further than your own.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

La ilaha illallahul-'Azeemul-Haleem. La ilaha illallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Azeem. La ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati wa Rabbul-ard, wa Rabbul-'Arshil-kareem.

“None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the Supreme, the Most Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the magnificent throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the noble throne.”

For a moment of real distress, when you need to say something true rather than explain anything.

اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allahumma rahmataka arjoo fala takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn, wa aslih li sha'ni kullahu, la ilaha illa ant.

“O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye, and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.”

When you feel like you cannot hold everything together on your own.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

La ilaha illallahul-'Azeemul-Haleem, la ilaha illallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Azeem, la ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati wa Rabbul-ardi wa Rabbul-'Arshil-kareem.

“None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the Supreme, the Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the noble Throne.”

What the Prophet ﷺ himself said when he was anxious — reported by Ibn Abbas.

يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ

Ya Hayyu ya Qayyumu bi rahmatika astagheeth.

“O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all — in Your mercy I seek help.”

Short enough to repeat quietly, over and over, when something is genuinely weighing on you.
